LUIS PARRA CANDIDATE FOR THE ARIZONA STATE LEGISLATURE, DISTRICT 2 UNITED STATES ARMY VETERAN The citizens of Southern Arizona have a rich history of military service. Women, men, sons, and daughters that live in the neighborhoods of Tucson, Sahuarita, Green Valley, and Nogales among other municipalities, serve or have served in our US Military. One of these Veteran sons from Santa Cruz County is Luis Parra, local attorney, public figure, and veteran of the first Persian Gulf War. After graduating from Nogales High School in 1989, Parra decided to enlist voluntarily in the United States Army to serve his country and seek higher education through the benefits of the GI Bill. After his mechanized infantry training in Fort Benning. Georgia, Parra was assigned to the celebrated First Cavalry Division (*Ist Cav") of the United States Army. "That training prepared me for what would come with the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in August of 1990", said Parra. From August to January of 1990, Parra and his unit donned the "Black Knights" were in the first line of action during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. LUIS PARRA In February of 1991, general Colin Powell ordered the Ist Cav to confront the enemy in reconnaissance missions within Iraq. This commitment led one of the first terrestrial battles in the Middle East labeled "Operation Knight Strike". "Said battle marked the beginning of the terrestrial battles in Iraq" recounts Parra who served in the combat missions that followed the hard fought Battle of the Ruqi Pocket. Parra was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge and Army Commendation Medal for ARIZONA STATE REPRESENTATIVE his overseas service. In 1995, Parra graduated from the University of Arizona and his academic success resulted in receiving the Cordova Scholarship from the Sandra Day O Conner School of Law at Arizona State University (ASU). Parra received his Doctorate in Law from ASU in 1999. In his professional life, Parra worked as a defense attorney for the city of Tucson, and later served as City Attorney for the city of Nogales, and Chief Deputy county attorney of Santa Cruz county. During the last twelve years, Parra has successfully operated his law firm, Parra Law Offices, PLLC, in Nogales, Arizona, specializing in international law, immigration and trade law. Parra has also been welcomed by his community in Southern Arizona for his hard work and dedication. He has served as the president of the Nogales Noon Lions Club and is the founding Chairman of the Kino Border Initiative in Nogales, Arizona, Parra is soon to celebrate 25 years of marriage with his wife Cecilia and they are blessed to have two children, Alán and Cristabela. Parra is proud to be a family man, and an active member of the southern Arizona community; traits that he affirms were cultivated and garnered during his years of military service.
