RTA our promise Regionalno Auchary toyou RTA PREPARING A NEW 20-YEAR PLAN As the Regional Transportation Authority moves toward completing the work of its 2006-voter approved regional transportation plan, the RTA anticipates it will have a new 20-year draft plan for public review and feedback in 2024. The RTA will finalize the new plan based on that feedback prior to presenting it to Pima County voters as early as May 2025. Proposed elements for a new $2.34 billion RTA plan include roadway (multimodal) corridor, transit, safety. active transportation (bicycle and pedestrian), and environmental improvements. A goal of the RTA, a regional taxing district, is to complete projects approved in the 2006 plan. To address scope changes and cost increases related to 2006 plan projects, the RTA Board has deferred four projects to the RTA Next draft plan for voter consideration as part of the overall plan in development. Remaining projects in the existing RTA plan will be completed by using a combination of RTA revenues from the half-cent sales tax that voters also approved in 2006 and federal and state dollars designated for regional projects. The federal and state dollars supplement the less-than-anticipated RTA revenues during and following the 2008 Great Recession. If a new RTA plan and tax extension are approved by voters in May 2025, funding collected in fiscal year 2025-26 would apply to the remaining 2006 RTA projects. Funds collected beyond the first year of the next RTA plan would apply to new projects and the four deferred projects, as allowed by RTA state statutes. Without an extension of the countywide half-cent sales tax and a new plan, the region will lose up to a $2.34 billion investment in our transportation network, thousands of jobs and millions in related economic vitality investments. The 2006 plan currently has invested more than $1.6 billion in RTA dollars in our regional economy. In fiscal year 2023, the RTA collected tax revenues of $119 million. The RTA represents the largest regional transportation funding source on an annual basis compared to federal and state resources, which combined for a total of $51 million in 2023. The RTA's purpose is to address priority regional transportation needs using your tax dollars. More than 1,000 transportation projects or service improvements have been completed under the 2006-approved plan.
